My name is Dr. Dominique Hammonds. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Distance Certified Counselor. I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I have been working in the mental health field since 2004 and have been counseling since 2010. I am trained to work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families dealing with a variety of mental health concerns, and I am committed to helping my clients move toward their personal goals.
I believe that progress starts with just one step. It is easy to become overwhelmed by your goals. It is difficult to continuously choose to take small steps toward change because the road to change is paved with both setbacks and successes. I urge you not to get lost in not getting it right, not being where you want to be, or the big picture. There's power in just one step. I urge you to take one step, again and again. Let me help you begin to take steps toward your goals.
I work with a wide range of issues, including but not limited to: motivation/ achievement, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, impulse control disorders, and relationship concerns. I have special interest and training in the following areas: higher education, couples counseling, counseling using technology, grief/ loss issues, and diversity/ multicultural counseling.
My theoretical approach is primarily cognitive-behavioral in nature; however, it will be as unique as you are and tailored to fit your individual needs. This means we may examine your unhelpful cognition, emotion, and behavioral patterns while folding in elements of Gestalt Therapy, Existential Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Reality Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Feminist Therapy approaches. Or – we’ll choose an approach that fits who you are and your presenting concern. I'll find the right balance of challenge and support and help you take steps toward your goals!
In my free time I enjoy running, traveling, cooking, and watching Netflix. I value spending time with my family and friends and learning to live in the moment. It is my personal commitment to wellbeing and fulfillment that motivates me to help others seeking the same in their own lives.
